Lab Facilities
Gulf Coast Chemical’s laboratory is located at the Abbeville, Louisiana facility. It is a fully functional Lab dedicated to analytical services for the oil and gas industry. The laboratory is multi purpose in that it is used to ensure quality control, provide our sales department with technical support and perform research and development functions.
The Quality Control Section of our laboratory performs material checks at all stages of manufacturing. Initially, the incoming raw material is spot checked to meet agreed guidelines. We use Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to obtain a fingerprint of initial formulas developed in our R & D laboratory. Samples of the finished product from our manufacturing process are matched against the laboratory fingerprint to ensure product quality. ALL materials leaving from our plant are QC’d before being delivered to our customers.
The Research Development Section stays abreast of new technology throughout the industry. Testing is conducted initially in-house. Formulations of new developments are then screened in the field as experimental before being added to the product line. The Research Development Section is sales driven. Emergency formulations and priority work are conducted under this heading. Our laboratory is ISO 9001 certified and capable of performing all testing required to ensure product quality and performance.
LABORATORY SERVICES
Oil Analysis
The laboratory is equipped to perform a variety of analyses on produced hydrocarbons. We have and maintain a state of the art cold finger test apparatus, which allows us to analyze and select the best paraffin inhibitor for a specific production and/or pipeline situation. In addition to standard ASTM pour points, we also run a performance pour point test that is designed to find a paraffin inhibitor that will prevent solidifying of the oil in holding vessels and/or prevent paraffin fall out in holding tanks. Rolled ball solvency tests are performed on solid paraffin to find the best solvent for removal of paraffin deposits.

Water Analysis
We offer several analytical services to our customers including phosphonate residuals, oil and grease in water (infrared method) and complete water analysis. Reports on individual mineral components such as iron or chloride content are also available. The reports on complete water analysis include a scaling tendency index for both carbonates and sulfates. Both spectrophotometric and Induced Coupled Plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (replaces atomic absorption technology) methods are available for these analyses. ICP-OES is the best overall multi-element spectroscopy technique with excellent sample throughput and a very wide analytical range. Millipore filter analyses are utilized in cases where total suspend solids is a factor in water quality.

Corrosion
Typically corrosion monitoring is in the form of coupon weighing and analysis as well as iron counts. These functions are performed by means of atomic absorption, NACE Recommended Practices and visual inspection. In selecting corrosion inhibitors, we perform emulsion tendency tests and linear polarization, which are the leading technologies in this field.

Other Analysis Available
In addition to the tests listed above, Gulf Coast Chemical offers several other analytical services. These services include lean and rich glycol analysis, linear polarization for corrosion inhibitor selection, bacteriological monitoring, solids identification through wet bench analysis, and corrosion failure analysis.
